“What are your plans for the future?” or “Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?”.

These questions prompt us to make plans for our lives in order to attain these goals. As a result, many of us come to the conclusion that our plans are the final determining factor for our future. So we make well detailed plans and believe that once we work towards them, then nothing can stop us.

Although to an extent this may be true, however, we forget that ultimately only God’s plan and purpose will eventually be carried out. As the Bible says in Proverbs 19:21

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

The truth is making plans and noting down action plans are required, even motivational and developmental sessions emphasise how crucial planning is to success. So we cannot completely erase planning. What we can do however is plan with God, in accordance to His will and purpose.

So here are some tips on how you can Plan with God:

  • Reading and Obeying God's Word: It is one thing to be a church goer and it is another thing to be a Christian who actively devotes his/her time to God's Word. In order to fully understand God's individual plan for us, we must first absorb then reflect His Word. And what better way to achieve this than by devoting time each day to meditate on God's Word.

  • Ceaseless Prayer: It is not enough to read God's word; prayer is just as important. When we pray, we ask God to reveal His will and plan to us, and to give us grace to live accordingly. When we do this, we find that we are planning and living life according to God's plan for us.

  • Trusting God's Judgement: As believers, sometimes we forget that God, our creator knew us even before we were born. A tip for planning with God is to trust that no matter how little we might understand; God has a perfect plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11).

  • Listening for Guidance and Direction: After meditating on God's Word and praying ceaselessly, we must also listen for direction. Be it by hearing from Him directly or obeying His Word in our hearts. When faced with a decision, no matter how small, we should hear from God before taking a step. This way, we are in accordance with God's plan in every aspect of our lives.

  • Being Part of a Godly Community: It is easier to plan with God when you are surrounded by friends & family that encourage and support you on your spiritual journey. Find a godly community that would guide you and hold you accountable in planning with God.

In order to fully realise our potential, we must decide within ourselves to be intentional on this journey with Christ as He guides and leads us through our unique path and purpose.

May the Grace of our Lord be with you.
Amen.
